Healthy Holiday Eating

The holiday season is upon us. A wonderful time to spend with family and loved ones. But the addition of festive food can make healthy eating a challenge and the holidays are no time to compromise our health. According to the National Institutes of Health, holiday eating can result in an extra pound or two every year. Over several years, this weight can really add up! But the good news is that this time of year doesn’t always have to mean weight gain. Focus on a healthy balance of food, activity, and fun. Whether at home or at your best friend’s Christmas party, there are many ways to prevent weight gain and stay healthy during the holiday season. Follow these tips healthy holiday eating tips to stay in shape and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!

1. Make just one trip to the party buffet.

2. Beware of liquid calories – egg nog, beer, wine, and soda.

3. Don’t hang out near the party buffet. Socialize a distance away. This will help prevent unconscious nibbling.

4. Be realistic. Trying to lose weight during the holidays may be a self-defeating goal. Instead, try to maintain your weight.

5. When you arrive at a party, avoid rushing to the food. Greet people you know – conversation is calorie free!

6. Survey the party buffet before filling your plate. Don’t waste calories on foods you don’t like or foods you can have anytime. Include vegetables and fruits to keep your plate balanced.

7. If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes 500 calories per day above your normal intake to gain one pound.

8. If you’re bringing a dish to share, make it healthful and delicious. That way you know there will be one thing you can munch on without racking up calories too fast!

9. Take the focus off food. Plan group activities with loved ones that aren’t all about food. Try playing games or taking a walking tour of Christmas decorations.

10. Plan time for exercise. Exercise helps to relieve holiday stress and prevent weight gain. Start by taking two 10 to 15 minute brisk walks per day.
