The alkaline diet is a diet based on the theory that certain foods affect the balance of acid and bases in the blood measured by pH. The optimum pH for the human body is 7.35-7.45, which is slightly alkaline. People usually have an acidic or lower pH that can cause chronic diseases. The alkaline diet theory claims that when certain foods are consumed they leave an ash that contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper. The food is classified as acid, alkaline, or neutral according to the pH of a solution made by the food’s ash and water.
The alkaline diet promotes foods that have an alkaline or basic affect on the body such as fresh fruits, especially citrus fruits, vegetables, especially potatoes, nuts, and beans. It discourages foods that have an acidic affect on the body such as animal products like meats and dairy products, grains, and the over consumption of salt and added sweeteners.
The alkaline diet along with regular exercise claims to prolong and improve the quality of life. It also claims to improve immune function, fewer yeast infections, healthier teeth and gums, higher energy levels, and slower aging.
Overall, the alkaline diet does not boast huge weight loss, but promotes a healthy diet that reduces the amount of animal products and increases the amount of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans. It promotes healthy aging by maintaining the body’s natural pH levels. The theory is not widely accepted in the medical community and it is advised to always talk with your doctor before starting a new diet.
